Elliott urges community to remain calm

Ulster Unionist MLA, Tom Elliott, has today urged the community to remain calm after recent dissident republican activities. There have been reports of an incident near Lisbellaw, but no clarification if it is terrorist related.

In a statement, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone representative said: “I am aware that earlier today the police closed a section of road near the village of Lisbellaw. Obviously, as word has spread about this people have got anxious, but I would strongly urge everyone to remain calm. It is absolutely vital that at a time like this we place our trust in the PSNI to take the necessary action to combat the threat posed by these dissident groupings.”

Following the brutal murder of two soldiers in Antrim and the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll in Craigavon, Mr Elliott stressed that people should remain vigilant and called on anyone with information to bring it forward to police.

He went on to say: “Clearly, this is a time when the community of Northern Ireland need to come together and make it clear that we do not want our country pulled backwards to the days of the troubles. Church leaders, political leaders and the security forces are all united to fight this common enemy and we will continue to work together at this time so that the community can rest assured that all that can be done, is being done to stop these terrorists.”

“I would urge anyone with any information they feel would be of use to the police to bring it forward. The perpetrators of these acts, and their associates, must be brought to justice and not be allowed to force their will on the people who want peace.”
