Cameron spot on to remove Sinn Fein Westminster expenses – Elliott
Ulster Unionist MLA, Tom Elliott, has said that "David Cameron’s assurances that Sinn Fein will lose their allowances after the next general election should he become Prime Minister is music to my and many other peoples ears. For too long, the people of Fermanagh and South Tyrone and other parts of Northern Ireland have watched on as Sinn Fein MP’s were elected to Westminster and then failed to take their seats. However, this of course did not stop them from claiming allowances. It is a sore spot which has annoyed many people within the community, not only from a Unionist background but also from a Nationalist background given that we are all taxpayers and deserve effective representation at all levels of government."
“The Ulster Unionist Party has always maintained that it is not only important to defend the Union but to enhance it for the future. This is why we have decided to work with the Conservative Party on the mainland. Like any organisation, Unionism can best be driven forward by strength in numbers.”
“People have asked me why I think the Conservative link is positive. I tell them that as a member of the UDR I fought alongside my colleagues in Defence of the Crown and out of loyalty to the United Kingdom. These are also the reasons why I am a proud member of the Orange Order. I want nothing more than to see the Union strengthened for the future so that my children can grow up as proud British citizens in Northern Ireland. The only effective way to ensure this happens is to work with fellow Unionists on the mainland and take on Nationalism and Republicanism within Government. Happily, David Cameron has demonstrated his willingness to do so by already outlining an end to the unjustifiable expenses claims made by Sinn Fein MP’s who don’t take their seats.”
