Clarification needed on plans for Maze site
Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has asked for clarification from the Office of First and Deputy First Minister following what he described as a “worrying” revelation regarding the proposed conflict transformation centre at the Maze site.
Mr Elliott explained that he is aware that correspondence has been issued from the Community Relations Council inviting groups to attend a meeting about the potential development of a conflict transformation facility.
“I am somewhat confused and worried about this development and about this correspondence which it would appear has been distributed amongst groups. In relation to the site at the Maze and how it would be developed, OFMdFM had stated that we were ‘back to square one with the masterplan’ so to speak and as far as the Ulster Unionist Party is concerned, nothing has been agreed on how the plans should move forward.”
“This information however seems to contradict this and I will be asking OFMdFM to clarify its position. If plans are still on the drawing board, then is this not slightly premature? The DUP has continually claimed that it has prevented a ‘shrine’ being built at the Maze, but this information makes it look otherwise. We will be asking for clarification on how far the project has been moved forward – a project we had been told had been stopped. It is clear there has been a lack of agreement by the two main parties in the Assembly over the progress on the Maze project, however it is vital that a conflict transformation centre is not allowed to progress.
