CAR PARKING CHARGES AT CRAIGAVON AREA HOSPITAL

.

Ulster Unionist Assembly member for Fermanagh & South Tyrone Tom Elliott MLA said he has received assurances on a number of issues regarding proposed car parking charges at Craigavon hospital.

Tom said: “The new charges will be introduced from Friday 7 August 2009 and will start from 50p (up to 1 hour) and rise to a maximum of £4.50p, which are lower than most other hospitals in Northern Ireland. I have received assurances that exemptions will apply to cancer patients attending for chemotherapy, relatives of patients in intensive care and parents of children who are long stay patients.

“I campaigned for a number of years for additional car parking spaces at the hospital and was delighted that the Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey MLA was able to make additional funding available to alleviate the chronic shortage of parking spaces.

“I have also received assurances that free car parking will be available for all the staff at the hospital and also that the free bus service which operates from South Tyrone Hospital, Dungannon will continue to run every day departing from the South Tyrone site at 2.00pm and 6.15 pm  and return journeys from Craigavon at 4.15pm and 8.45pm . The Trust are considering extending the route to include a stop in Armagh.

“The money generated from hospital car parking will be used to cover the expenses of managing the new car parking facilities and I hope that additional profits will be used for patient care”
