Elliott welcomes Winter Fuel Payment Awareness Campaign

Ulster Unionist MLA, Tom Elliott has welcomed the news that the Department for Social Development is going to run an Awareness Campaign to inform people of the need to apply for their Winter Fuel Payment. Those eligible for the payment and aged 60-79 will receive £250, while people aged 80 and over will receive £400.

In a statement, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone representative said: “I am very glad to hear that the Department for Social Development has taken action now in September to get the message out to people about the need to apply for their Winter Fuel Payment. Some people will receive automatic payments, namely those who received the payment last year and people who are aged 60 and over and get State Pension or another social security benefit, excluding Housing benefit or Child Benefit, during 21st-27th September 2009. However, there are going to be other people who may be receiving the payment for the first time and so it is important that the information is made available. This is why the campaign is very welcome.”

“I believe that adverts informing people about how to claim are to be included in five daily newspapers and fifty local newspapers across Northern Ireland. Given that the vast majority, if not all houses buy at least one paper in the week it is certainly a fine method of getting the message across.”

“I sincerely hope that this awareness campaign is a success and would urge people eligible for the payment to get their claims in and get the money which will help them keep warm this winter when times are hard.”
