Ulster Unionist Assembly member for Fermanagh & South Tyrone, Tom Elliott MLA has welcomed the high visibility operation which has taken place across Northern Ireland to tackle the recent increase in dissident republican activity. A series of searches have been carried out in the Dungannon area and arrests have been made.
Tom said: "Any law abiding citizen will welcome the higher visibility presence of PSNI officers on our streets over recent days and realise that this is a necessary step to prevent those with murderous intent from carrying out terrorist attacks.
I have campaigned over many months that we require a higher police presence and resources to tackle the growing problem of dissident republicans and we have witnessed in many areas in Fermanagh, South Armagh and Craigavon the planting of bombs with the sole aim to kill members of the security forces. The threat from dissidents must be quashed and not permitted to grow and plunge Northern Ireland back into the dark days of the troubles. These people have no mandate from the majority of people in Northern Ireland and their only objective is to cause misery and mayhem.
It was expected that with the new Chief Constable, Matt Baggott taking up his new post today that dissident republicans would mark his arrival with some form of attack and I am pleased the PSNI have been pro active in their strategy to thwart such an incident. It is time that all members of the Policing Board, including Sinn Fein give their unqualified support to the security forces."
