Media report confirms UUP warning

Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has said that a BBC report looking at Executive spending cuts has confirmed UUP warnings in relation to the state of Northern Ireland’s budget and the failure of Finance Minister Sammy Wilson to recognise the impact of the global economic crisis on Northern Ireland.

Commenting as the BBC revealed that Executive spending cuts would total £370 million, the UUP member said; “The cuts announced today are most worrying for Northern Ireland’s budget, although I do have to say that they are not unexpected.  This is something the UUP has been warning about for months and something the DUP has been denying for months.  Just last week on the BBC’s Stormont Live Programme the Finance Minister said that my claims were unsubstantiated – this report today however shows that this is simply not the case.”

“It is time that Minister Wilson was open about the state of Northern Ireland’s economy.  It is time to take another look at the Programme for Government – it is time to have open discussion about how to get ourselves out of this situation.  It is time the Finance Minister started listening to the Ulster Unionist Party.”
