Ulster Unionist MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, Tom Elliott, has said that Presbyterian Mutual Society savers have been left in limbo during an "increasingly desperate time".
"Given that almost 10,000 people were affected by the collapse of the PMS this time last year, any respite from this crisis is a long time coming.
"Assurances given by the deputy First Minister in response to a question I posed that options will be looked at in the very near future are cold comfort to those facing the loss of their life savings.
"I appreciate that OFMdFM is paying close attention to the matter, but we really need answers, and soon.
"We are approaching Christmas in a year when poverty and unemployment are rife and we need some good news for the thousands afflicted by the collapse of this society," the UUP MLA said.;
"It is clear for all to see that the PMS savers have not been fairly treated, and that is something we as an Assembly must work to rectify.
"I welcome the prospect of a local bank potentially being involved in rescuing the society, and hope that this at least would ensure equitable treatment for honest, hard-working savers who have been rocked by unfortunate circumstances.
"Certainly any movement on this issue is very welcome, however it is important to re-assert that it must not be tied into the negotiations about devolving policing.
"It is my firm belief, and that of my Party colleagues, that the UK government should do more to provide help for the PMS and urged that this matter should be resolved without using it as a bargaining mechanism on successful devolution of policing and justice. These are two totally separate issues and must be dealt with on their own merits."
