Ulster Unionist MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, Tom Elliott, has said that Jeffrey Donaldson’s "ill-judged slurs" over peerages are perhaps more a reflection on the activities of his own Party than on the UUP.

Ulster Unionist MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, Tom Elliott, has said that Jeffrey Donaldson’s "ill-judged slurs" over peerages are perhaps more a reflection on the activities of his own Party than on the UUP.

"When Jeffrey is slinging accusations of a ’grubby down-payment on a peerage’, is he suggesting that such honours are bought and sold? In that case, what price did Ian Paisley pay for his wife Eileen’s peerage? Lords Morrow and Browne for theirs? Indeed, what was the cost of Jeffrey’s Privy Council appointment - the abandonment of his opposition to the Belfast Agreement?

"This sort of ludicrous mud slinging demonstrates the depths to which the DUP are prepared to sink in their desperate attempt to claw back the unionist vote.

"Jeffrey proffers public proposals of unionist unity, all the while issuing inflammatory media statements out the back door. What sort of genuine effort at ’unity’ comes parcelled in vitriol"
