Airplane skills “set to take off” in Fermanagh

Ulster Unionist MLA, Tom Elliott, has expressed his delight at the proposed expansion of courses based on aircraft maintenance in County Fermanagh. He was speaking after an agreement was reached between the South West College and St Angelo airport officials.

In a statement, Mr Elliott said: “It is important that if we want to see industries such as the aeronautical industry maintained and enhanced that people are afforded the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to work within the sector. That is why the new proposed courses that should be made available through the South West College in conjunction with St Angelo are an excellent idea, and will benefit not only the industry but also the local community. It is always terrific to see the creation of new and exciting courses and opportunities, and I am confident this will be the start of a wonderful working relationship.”

“I am very pleased that the Minister for Employment and Learning, Sir Reg Empey, took the opportunity to visit Fermanagh and see for himself the wide range of possibilities that are available from St Angelo. With the co-operation of the South west College, we can now work to move these opportunities forward.”

“I would like to pay tribute to the officials from both the South West College and St Angelo who worked with department officials and council officials to make the creation of these new courses a reality. County Fermanagh has a long history of maintaining aircraft, not only in years gone by such as during the Second World War, but also right up to the present day when we see St Angelo thriving. It is important that this area of expertise was built upon for the future, and the new courses now make this possible.”

“I look forward to working with both the South West College and St Angelo in the future as we seek to do what we can to create further opportunities for the people of Fermanagh.”
