Ulster Unionist Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tom Elliott has said it is "deeply saddening" that Tyrone Crystal is being forced to close.

Mr Elliott said: "The loss of this well-known and highly respected local company is regrettable, and an unfortunate sign of the times in which we are living. Having proven a significant draw for visitors, and indeed for those wishing to give a genuine ’local’ gift, the loss of Tyrone Crystal from Northern Ireland is significant.

"I commend the work of the management team to sustain Tyrone Crystal, however we recognise that market conditions have unfortunately done their worst. This is a disappointing further blow to the Northern Ireland business community.

"Although the loss of any business or job in the current climate is extremely difficult for all those involved, there are certain brand names and firms who’s disappearance will be felt not just by the staff but right across the wider community, Tyrone Crystal has helped put Dungannon on the Map for forty years now and brought a sense of pride to many Tyrone residents, especially when they saw an item of crystal on display far from Dungannon.

I know the firm has had many ups and downs over the years, but the commitment of the staff and local community have seen it pull through on many occasions, unfortunately despite the efforts of the current managers it seems it has become yet another victim of the recession, with "luxury items" often the first thing to get cut back .

Even though the numbers employed are a fraction what they once were, I hope most of the current staff will speedily find re-employment, and even at this late hour a buyer may be found to continue on with the Tradition and Craftsmanship that has been associated with Dungannon for many years."

"This marks the end of a proud 40 year history for the manufacturer. I offer my commiserations to staff, and would urge them to seek out all re-training and employment support available as they face this difficult time."
