Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has questioned the methods of Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy following the news that he doesn’t intend to meet with other Department Ministers when looking at the issue of the proposed A5 road. Commenting on the issue Tom said; “Given the controversy that has surrounded the proposed A5 Route I find it extremely unacceptable that the Regional Development Minister has admitted that he will not speak to Ministerial colleagues on the issue.” “In an Oral question to the Minister I asked if the Minister intended to discuss the environmental issues surrounding the A5 road with the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Michelle Gildernew or the Environment Minister Edwin Poots given the particular problems this development will pose for many farmers and environmentalists. His response - he admitted that although his officials would talk to Minister Gildernew and Poots, “I do not intend to personally speak directly with the respective Ministers.” “I would ascertain that this is hardly the way to run a Government. Not only is he going against the wishes of many of the rural residents who will be affected by this road but in failing to liaise directly with other departments he fails to recognise the importance of this issue for many in my constituency.”
