Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has said that questions remain about Sinn Fein’s commitment to a peaceful society in Northern Ireland following their refusal to condemn terrorist activity and violence during today’s Assembly debate on the 40th Anniversary of Disbanding of B-Specials and formation of UDR.

Mr Elliott said: “Following today’s debate it is clear that Sinn Fein are still not fully committed to the Northern Ireland peace process.

“During the debate I challenged Francie Molloy that I was content to condemn all those who had broken the law, including members of the security services but was he willing to do the same – He refused. This says a lot about Sinn Fein’s ability to accept the wrong that was inflicted by terrorists on our citizens and communities. Today we witnessed the real Sinn Fein with their refusal to denounce the IRA violence.

“I took great pride in my many years service with the UDR, which served the entire community. Sadly many within the organisation paid the supreme sacrifice with their lives through the actions of the ruthless murder squads of the IRA. It is sad that Sinn Fein do not recognise these evil deeds and condemn them for what they are.

“The security services of this province cannot be equated to the terrorist organisations and their members who skulked about within our society and caused murder and mayhem bringing devastation to many families for years. This can never be allowed to give any similarities.”
