Ulster Unionist MLA, Tom Elliott, has welcomed the news that the total number of dentists in the Western Health and Social Care Trust area has risen by almost 28% between 2005 and 2010.
In a statement, Mr Elliott said: "When Michael McGimpsey took on the role as Minister for Health he made it clear that he recognised the very real need that existed in Fermanagh, and indeed the wider Western Trust area, for NHS dentists. This is why he embarked upon a process of recruiting new dentists into the area and why I am absolutely delighted to see 31 extra dentists providing Health Service Dental Services compared to five years ago. This includes the 15 dentists employed by Oasis Dental Care who were awarded a contract by the Department in May last year."
"As looking after your teeth is so vitally important, it is terrific that thousands of people now have access to dental treatment which many of them would otherwise not have being able to afford. I know that Minister McGimpsey remains committed to ensuring that people across Northern Ireland see a proactive, less bureaucratic health service, and this success is one example of the practical steps that can be taken to ensure that the communitys needs are being met."
