Ulster Unionist MLAs led by example today as they showed colleagues a ‘clean pair of wheels’ in the Northern Ireland Assembly Cycle Race at Parliament Buildings.

Joining the launch of the Travelwise initiative ‘2 Wheels: 2 Weeks’, the energetic UUP MLAs called for a committed community effort to effect personal and environmental change through uptake of cycling.

Speaking after taking part in the cycle race, Tom Elliott said: “Cycling is a way to tackle multiple issues, from cutting down congestion and harmful emissions to improving personal health. These are important areas that we all have a stake in, and a part that we can play.

“Given that some 25 per cent of car journeys are less than 3km, clearly there is the potential to put on your trainers, hop on your bike, and put the environment and your health first.

“This two week schedule has much to offer, from Bike to School Day, Bike to Work Day, the Maracycle and the Belfast Grand Prix Cycle, and I would urge people to get involved or at the very least take on board the important messages that underpin this initiative.”
