Republican flags “damaging businesses and causing tension” – Elliott

Ulster Unionist MLA, Tom Elliott, has said that the erection of Republican flags in the Kilmacormick area of Enniskillen is “causing unnecessary tension within the local community.”

In a statement Mr Elliott said: “A number of concerned individuals have contacted my office following the erection of Irish Tri-colours, Erin Go Bragh flags and a Starry Plough flag along the Kilmacormick road in Enniskillen. Many people view them as an attempt to claim that part of the town for a single tradition, when that really isn’t the case. Not only are there many people living in the area who are not Republican, but the road itself is used by thousands of people commuting to work or visiting the Erne Hospital each and every day.”

“Many people in Fermanagh and indeed throughout Northern Ireland cannot even erect the Union Flag on their Hall or property as it would be removed, stolen or result with their property being damaged.

“Some people have said to me that the flags are not only creating tension within the community but are also putting them off stopping with businesses along the road that could undoubtedly benefit from the passing trade. This is why I would strongly urge those who erected the flags to remove them as they are undermining the area, damaging business and creating division within the town when it is totally unnecessary.”
